Gloria Steinem, Feminist Icon and Ms. Magazine Founder, Dies at 92
Gloria Steinem, the journalist and activist whose name became synonymous with American feminism, has died peacefully at her New York home at the age of 92, closing out nearly seven decades of advocacy.
Gloria Steinem, one of the most influential voices in the American women's rights movement, passed away peacefully at her home in New York City. She was 92. Her family and foundation shared the news through her official social media, noting that she was surrounded by loved ones at the time. No cause of death has been made public so far.
Over nearly seven decades, Steinem didn't just report on the feminist movement she helped build it, brick by brick, through her writing, organizing, and public advocacy.
From Toledo to the Front Lines of Journalism
Born on March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem's childhood was unusually unsettled. Her father worked as a traveling salesman, and the family often lived out of a trailer. After her parents separated in 1946, she took on caregiving duties for her mother, who battled depression, before eventually moving to Washington, D.C., to finish high school with her sister.
She graduated from Smith College in 1956 and later traveled to India on a fellowship, where exposure to grassroots protest movements left a lasting mark on her approach to activism.
A Journalist Who Made Herself Part of the Story
Settling in New York in 1960, Steinem built her early reputation on immersive, first-person journalism. Her most famous piece came in 1963, when she spent nearly two weeks working undercover as a waitress at a Playboy Club, later exposing the poor treatment and harassment staff endured. The story put her on the map as a journalist unafraid to step directly into the narrative she was covering.
By the late 1960s, her focus had shifted more explicitly toward politics and gender equality, a shift that deepened after she attended a meeting of the radical feminist group Redstockings in 1968.
Steinem was among the women who opened doors in newsrooms, and others followed in different corners of the industry, including Maria Bartiromo, who became a pioneering voice in financial television.
Building the Institutions of a Movement
Steinem's most lasting contribution may be Ms. Magazine, which she co-founded in 1972. It became one of the first major U.S. publications to center feminist issues workplace discrimination, domestic violence, and reproductive rights at a time when most mainstream media avoided them.
She also co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus in 1971 alongside Betty Friedan, Bella Abzug, and Shirley Chisholm, along with the Women's Media Center and the Ms. Foundation for Women, extending her influence well beyond journalism.
Recognition Later in Life
Steinem's work earned her some of the country's highest honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013 and the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities in 2021. In 2020, her life was dramatized in the biopic The Glorias, with Julianne Moore portraying her.
A Complicated, Evolving Legacy
Steinem's legacy hasn't gone unchallenged. Some historians have pointed out that the early feminist movement she helped popularize often centered white, middle-class experiences, sidelining the concerns of women of color and working-class women. In later years, Steinem publicly acknowledged these gaps and worked to spotlight a broader range of feminist voices internationally.
Remembering Her Impact
Tributes have poured in from women's organizations and public figures crediting Steinem with reshaping everyday realities for American women from the ability to independently hold a credit card to expanded access to higher education and workplace protections. Her foundation has asked well-wishers to consider donations to women's advocacy causes in lieu of flowers.
